Meeting Summary

Monday, December 1, 2008

 

 

1.               The monthly TNA meeting was held on Monday, December 1, 2008.  It began at 7:03 P. M., and was held in the Warner Elementary School library.   There were 16 persons present at the start of the meeting.  Ten additional persons joined the meeting in progress.

2.               Howard Sholl, TNA President, began by requesting the crime stats report.

·       Tom Baker reported that the neighborhood crime stats are good this month.  There has been only one burglary.

3.               Officer Matt Severance, TNA’s Community Police officer, addressed the group.

·       Your crime stats are good relative to other neighborhoods.

·       “More eyes and ears in the neighborhood” was the topic of the last TNA Board meeting.

·       The other community officer is Joe Miller.

·       Residents are urged to use their cell phones to report suspicious activity.

·       When calling, the first thing to do is to report your location. Some 911 calls go to New Castle County, so be sure to give your location.

·       654-5151 is the non-emergency phone numbers.  Use this number to report irregular activity.

·       We find ourselves in a recession now.  Christmas time is a time for the snatching of packages from porches.   Suggestion: Have packages delivered to someone who is home.

·       Take your GPS devices with you when you leave your cars.

·       Keep an eye in your neighborhood.

·       Go to hardware store and purchase a motion detector to deter intruders.

4.               Howard Sholl addressed the group

·       TNA registrations were requested.

·       He asked for a description of the recent car chase which took place in the neighborhood.  A description was provided.

5.               Pat Joyce addressed the group about a car which was damaged.

6.               Norm Griffiths, City Council President-elect, addressed the group:

·       Norm started by saying: “It has been a pleasure to serve as your Second District Council Member for the last 18 years.”

·       The 105th City Council and the Mayor will be sworn in on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at the Grand.

·       The new budget has not been seen.  The Mayor will present it in time.

·       On Tuesday, December 2, 2008, there will be caroling on the square. 

·       A handout was distributed, entitled “Home Energy Checklist.”

·       A public workshop on the downtown transportation circulation and traffic flow will be presented on December 2 from 4 to 7 PM at the Chase Center.

·       Verizon wants to introduce fiber optics in the city neighborhoods to compete with Comcast.   There would be no additional franchise fees for the city.  We have a Cable TV Commission in city government.

·       According to the FCC, Comcast’s response time is four hours.  It this does not happen, we are urged to file a complaint.

·       A remaining issue is where the new cable will be placed.   The completion could take up to five years.

·       He ended: “It has been a pleasure to serve TNA, but I will be attending to the meetings from time to time.”

7.               Greg Panik, the TNA Treasurer, addressed the group:

·       Only three checks went out this past month.

·       Some checks have yet to clear.

8.               Howard Sholl conducted the drawing.  To be eligible one’s TNA registration fee must have been paid.

·       Two certificates for Domain Hudson were awarded to:

o      Joan and Howard Miller,

o      A J Volturo.

·       Two certificates from the Cherry Tree Group were awarded to:

o      Tom and Ann Marie Higley

o      Greg and Wendy Pollock

9.               Tim Sharp announced that there are four new volunteers for the Neighborhood Watch program.

·       An issue with the basketball courts in the park near Van Buren Street arose in the recent TNA Board meeting.

·       Suggestion: Bring your cell phone when you walk your dog, and wear bright clothing.  Report any problems immediately.

·       The problem area is between Van Buren Street and Baynard Blvd., and between 18th to 21st Streets.

10.            Howard Sholl addressed the group:

·       The City came out with a rule on the recycling of leafs.

·       Our time slot for leaf pick-up was one of the first.

·       A new program is to put your leaves in bags supplied by the city.

·       Bags can be gotten at 500 Wilmington Avenue, or 401 Jefferson Street.

11.            John Rago, Mayor’s Office Director of Communications and Policy Development, addressed the group:

·       He repeated that free bags to recycle the leaves are available.

·       You can pick up the mulch later in the spring.

·       Christmas trees can be put out on the normal trash day.

12.            Howard announced “Caroling in the Square” in Rodney Square on Tuesday, December 2:

·       4 PM to 6 PM - ice skating,

·       6 PM to 8 PM - the rest of the celebration.

·       Fliers were distributed.

13.            Pat Joyce addressed the group:

·       Hanover Church is involved with food distribution.

·       The program takes care of family or individual for three days.

·       An individual can come once a month.

·       Maybe TNA could find ways to help out.

14.            An announcement was made from the floor:

·       Recall Meg Hoefer, the Principal of Warner School, came to speak to TNA in September.

·       Warner is supporting the fine arts.

·       Four ensemble groups from the Delaware Symphony are scheduled to come to Warner.

·       TNA members are welcome to attend.

15.            The meeting adjourned at 8:20 PM.
