Triangle Neighborhood Association

Monday, February 11, 2008

1.                A regular meeting of the Triangle Neighborhood Association was held on February 11, 2008 in the Salesianum School library. Howard Scholl, TNA President, called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM.   There were 16 persons present at the beginning of the meeting, and five persons joined the meeting in progress.

2.                Concetta LaMarca distributed a membership list, and requested those present to verify the information.

3.                Corporal Joe Miller, Wilmington Police Department, addressed the group:

·       His cell Number is 463-4204.  If Corporal Miller and/or his partner, Officer Bill Draper, are not on duty, they will find out for the caller, who is available.  Their regular shift ends at 2 AM.

·       There have been complaints about speeding on Baynard Blvd.  It has both a 20 mph and a 25 mph zone.  Fifteen tickets have been written in the past week in an effort to enforce the speed limit.

·       A burglary occurred recently, and two youth (kids) were arrested.  The door of the house was not left open, but was forced.   We do not know if these individuals will be linked to other burglaries in the area. This incident happened during the day. The City does have a daytime curfew: 9 AM to 2 PM.  Children should be in school, and not on the streets.

·       Be conscious of storing away ladders and outside furniture, especially as the weather gets warmer.

·       Keep items out of cars, like laptop computers and radios.

·       Abandoned cars are being ticketed.  Vehicles can be towed.

·       Comment from the floor:  We recently purchased property on Baynard Blvd., and we have started fixing up the house.  A window was broken, and water came in the house.  Our shed was entered and tools were taken.   Stories from the neighbors tell of other break-ins, which have forced people away. There are no neighbors around at night, since the area is commercial.   What do we do?  Response: Corporal Miller said he will do what ever is necessary.  Abandoned houses draw problems. He will get in touch with License and Inspection.

4.                Howard Scholl requested reports from elected officials; however, no officials were present.

5.                Chris Chalfont spoke about the Red Clay Referendum, scheduled for February 28 from 10 AM to 8 PM.

·       Red Clay needs money, but I will not vote for it.

·       There is the concern about the mismanagement of funds.

·       A dialog is open with Dr. Andrzejewski, Superintendent, and Mr. Becnel, Board Chair.

·       Red Clay is getting the word out in various parts of the district; however, we have seen little promotion in the Triangle Neighborhood area.   See the website www.redclay.k12.de.us for details.  The requests are broken down into categories.

·       Prestige Academy’s status as a single gender school has been tabled until the General Assembly comes back into session on Tuesday, March 11, 2008.

·       Loren Grober has been composing a letter to be sent to the members of the General Assembly about TNA’s interaction with Prestige Academy in December 2007.

6.                Howard Scholl asked for the presentation of any neighborhood business:

·       Observation from the floor: Neighborhood Watch needs new signs for the cars.  Can TNA purchase new signs from the treasury?

·       A motion was made to purchase the signs.  The motion passed unanimously.

·       Observation from the floor: People are not leaving their lights on.  Light is a great crime deterrent.

·       Another Hazardous Waste Collection will be held on March 1, 2008 at Frawley Stadium from 8 AM to 4 PM.

·       Question from the floor:  How do we discard of yard waste in the winter?  Answer: Yard waste can be placed in a separate can, and put out with the regular trash on Thursdays.

·       Red Clay Consolidated School District has waved deadlines for Prestige Academy. As was said previously, the State Senate will address the issue when they come back in session in March.

7.                Suzanne Tuthill addressed the group to say that at our March meeting some representatives from the Delaware Horticulture Society will be present.  Later, these representatives will return with a diagram of our community garden, which will strive to bring us back to former days.

8.                Howard mentioned that Sergeant Cullen from the Police Department is willing to talk to TNA about crime prevention.

9.                Tim Sharpe mentioned that Neighborhood Watch is always looking for new members.  Recall, we spoke at a previous meeting about having a pizza party at Gallucio’s for persons concerned with neighborhood security issues.

10.           The next meeting will be on Monday, March 3 at 7:00 PM at Warner School.

11.           The meeting adjourned at 7:50 PM.
